    Hi Gabi, I am learning so much from you! Thanks for sharing all that! I see you are using a normal router to cut the binding channels and you seem to just run it on the top of the guitar. Doesn't that make for uneven binding channels since the soundboard and back are domed? There are many binding jogs out there that make sure the router reference the sides, so the channels are perendicular to the sides... not the top. I am curious wether you really just use a router and run it on the (domed) top or if I am overseeing something in your process. Maybe the unevenness of the channels is so marginal you just factor it in? Thanks so much

    • @GabiM3112
      @GabiM3112 25 днів тому

      Hello there, formerly I just used the router and made sure that I ran the base as evenly as I could on the top and back, meaning I tried to hold the router bit as parallelly as I could towards the sides. A small router base also helps because if you shift in any way, it doesn't matter too much, since - as you say - to my experience and deviations are marginal. I've used that technique in my guitar building class also and students were rather successful with it. After my first win in the GGBO, though, I used my vouchers for some channel cutting router bits which I'm using today. I also bought a stand/channel cuttiing jig for the router to go in so that a very small dome rides on the curve of the top/back to aling the router even straighter with the sides. You can see that in my later builds.

      @@GabiM3112 Hi Gabi, thanks for the quick reply! Good to know. I was wondering if I was missing something. Thank you for your explanation. You say that you use a table saw to cut the right angle of 1.8 degrees. Do you use a jig for that, or just set the saw in such an angle? And if so, how do you measure?

    • @GabiM3112
      @GabiM3112 26 днів тому

      I set the saw to roughly to 2 degrees and then move back just about a hair. While sanding I make the last adjustments by putting some more pressure on the required side/part of the neck.

  • @GarlandStringedInstruments
    @GarlandStringedInstruments 26 днів тому

    Vielen Dank for the shout-out Gabi... I like loose tenons too, for exactly the reason you mention - it means getting the neck angle and joint correct can be done so much more easily without the tenon in the way. I also usually remove some wood (1-2mm) in the central part of the face of the heel (the face next to the body), leaving the edges untouched. This helps avoid gaps between the sides of the heel and the the body. Your method of flattening both this face and the end of the body obviously largely eliminates this problem too. Very nice video - thanks for posting!

    Nice video though a critical missing step not shown is how was the purfling binding channels cut on the top, particularly the area where the bevel is?

    • @GabiM3112
      @GabiM3112 Місяць тому

      If you watch closely, you see, that with this method, you DON'T cut a channel at the bevel, only at the rest of the guitar top, as you would do on any other guitar without a bevel. That's not any different from cutting a binding channel, you just adjust the depth and hight for the cut. For the bevel part you cut the top to shape before glueing it on and then you directly add the purfling. Depending on the depth of the purfling, you may have to feed some wood under it to make it level with the the top (which I had to do in this case). Next to the purfling, you add the sacrificial wood on which the veneer sits.
